A routine that makes sense for you
You’re not alone. Between trending ingredients and complicated routines, it can be difficult to know what deserves a place in your day. A thoughtful routine starts with a few essentials, then adds targeted products that fit your skin and your goals.
At LUVION, my approach to skin care is the same as my approach to aesthetics: understand the individual, build a personalized plan, and keep it practical enough to follow.
Morning: protect and prepare
Your morning routine helps keep skin comfortable and prepares it for daily exposure to sunlight.
- 1. Cleanse gently. Choose a cleanser that leaves your skin feeling clean and comfortable. A foaming formula may suit oily skin, while dry or sensitive skin often prefers a creamier option.
- 2. Apply optional eye care. If you use an eye serum or cream, apply a small amount around the orbital bone, following its directions. Avoid getting product into the eyes or too close to the lash line unless the product is specifically intended for that area.
- 3. Add an antioxidant serum, if tolerated. Vitamin C can be a useful addition for concerns such as uneven tone and environmental exposure. It is an optional step, and the right formula depends on your skin’s sensitivity. Apply before moisturizer, following the product’s directions.
- 4. Moisturize. Oily skin can benefit from moisturizer too. Choose a lighter texture if you prefer, and a richer formula when your skin feels dry or tight.
- 5. Finish with sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning. Include the face, ears, neck, and other exposed areas. Reapply when outdoors according to the label, especially after swimming or sweating. For those who enjoy light coverage, a tinted sunscreen can make this step easier to incorporate into a daily routine.
Evening: cleanse and treat thoughtfully
At night, focus on removing the day’s products and using targeted treatments without overwhelming your skin.
- 1. Cleanse. Remove makeup and sunscreen thoroughly, using a gentle approach.
- 2. Apply optional eye care. Applying a gentle eye moisturizer before a facial retinoid can help protect the delicate surrounding skin. Keep facial retinoids away from eyelids, lash lines, and the corners of the eyes.
- 3. Use your selected treatment. This might be a retinoid, a pigment-correcting product, or another serum chosen for your needs. You do not need every category, and adding several active products at once can make irritation more likely.
- 4. Moisturize. Finish with a moisturizer suited to your skin. On nights when your skin feels irritated, a simple cleansing and moisturizing routine may be the most helpful choice.
Retinol, retinal, and tretinoin: where do you start?
These ingredients belong to the retinoid family, but their strengths and formulations vary.
Retinol and retinal are available in over-the-counter products. Tretinoin is a prescription medication that requires an individualized discussion with a prescribing clinician.
Starting with a gentle formula and using it less frequently can help your skin adjust. More strength is not automatically better, and you do not need to progress to a prescription to have a worthwhile routine. Percentages also cannot be compared directly across different retinoids.
Follow the product’s directions and increase use only as tolerated. Persistent burning, redness, or peeling is a reason to step back and reassess.
What about pigment correctors and growth factors?
These are targeted additions, rather than essentials for everyone.
A pigment-correcting product may be appropriate for uneven tone or dark spots, alongside consistent sun protection. Growth-factor products are another optional category that may be considered for specific cosmetic goals.
The best choice depends on your skin, the complete formulation, and how it fits with the products you already use. A higher price or longer ingredient list does not automatically make a product more useful.
Consistency matters more than complexity
A routine you can follow comfortably is more valuable than an elaborate routine that leaves your skin irritated or your products unused.
Start with gentle cleansing, moisturizer, and daily sunscreen. Add one targeted product at a time so you can understand how your skin responds.
Your routine should also be flexible. Dry weather, sensitivity, and recent aesthetic treatments may call for temporary changes.
